Terrorist Offenders (Restriction of Early Release) Act 2020

Summary

This Act prevents people convicted of terrorist offences from being released early on licence (a type of conditional release). Instead of potentially leaving prison after serving two-thirds of their sentence, terrorist offenders must now serve at least three-quarters of their full sentence before they can be considered for release.

A vote to support means

  • Supporting this Act means backing tougher rules that stop terrorist offenders from being released early from prison. Supporters believe it keeps the public safer by ensuring dangerous criminals serve their full sentences rather than being let out partway through.

A vote to oppose means

  • Critics worry the Act removes flexibility from the justice system and could lead to overcrowded prisons. Some argue it doesn't address rehabilitation and may treat all terrorist offenders the same way, even though individual cases can be very different.
