Wales Act 2017

Summary

The Wales Act 2017 gives the Welsh Government more control over decisions in Wales, particularly around taxes and local policies. Rather than always asking the UK Parliament in London for permission, Welsh politicians can now make more of their own choices on matters that affect Welsh communities directly.

A vote to support means

  • Supporting this Act means giving Wales more powers to run its own affairs without needing permission from Westminster every time. It allows Welsh politicians to make decisions on important issues like income tax and housing, which supporters believe will help Wales develop policies that suit Welsh people's needs better.

A vote to oppose means

  • Critics worry that giving Wales more tax powers could lead to higher taxes for Welsh people compared to the rest of the UK. Some are also concerned that splitting powers between Westminster and Cardiff could create confusion about who is responsible for what, and might weaken the unity of the United Kingdom.
