Mortgage Prisoners Inquiry Bill [HL]
[As Introduced]
A
BILL
to
This bill establishes a formal inquiry into 'mortgage prisoners', borrowers trapped on expensive standard variable rates (SVRs) after the 2008 financial crisis, often unable to remortgage due to damaged credit histories or stricter lending criteria. The inquiry would investigate how many people remain affected, why lenders have restricted their options, and what remedies or compensation might be appropriate. It aims to provide accountability for a cohort of homeowners who have paid significantly more in interest than borrowers who successfully remortgaged to better rates.
Presented by Lord Sharkey.
