Horticultural Peat (Prohibition of Sale) Bill
[As Introduced]
A
BILL
to
This bill would ban the sale of peat and peatbased products for gardening and horticulture purposes in the UK. Currently, gardeners and commercial growers can legally purchase peat to use in compost, potting soil, and soil conditioning. The bill aims to eliminate this market to protect peatland ecosystems, which store significant amounts of carbon and support rare wildlife. Gardeners would need to switch to alternative growing media such as coir, wood fibre, or compost made from green waste.
