European Union (Withdrawal) (No. 2) Act
Summary
This Act gave Parliament the legal power to block a no-deal Brexit and required the government to ask for more time from the EU if no agreement had been reached by October 31st, 2019. Essentially, it stopped the Prime Minister from forcing the UK out of the EU without a deal that Parliament had approved.
A vote to support means
- —Supporting this Act means wanting Parliament to have more control over Brexit decisions rather than the Prime Minister making them alone. Supporters believed it would give MPs a chance to vote on any Brexit deal before it became final, protecting against a 'no-deal' Brexit that could harm the economy.
A vote to oppose means
- —Critics worried the Act would delay Brexit and make negotiations with the EU harder by showing uncertainty. Some believed it undermined the Prime Minister's ability to negotiate effectively and went against the 2016 referendum result that the public had voted for.
