Matthew Style was appointed Interim Second Permanent Secretary and Chief Operating Officer in March 2026.

His previous roles include:

• Director General, System Development at the Department of Health and Social Care

• Director General, Secondary Care and Integration at the Department of Health and Social Care

• Deputy Chief Finance Officer at NHS England and NHS Improvement

• Director of Local Government Finance (including adult social care) at the Department for Communities and Local Government

• Deputy Director, Public Services and Head of the Health and Social Care Team at HM Treasury

He has also served as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister.
