Crown Immunity (Prisons) Bill

[As Introduced]
A
BILL
to

This bill removes Crown Immunity protections from prisons in England and Wales, meaning prison services can now be held legally liable for breaches of health and safety law, similar to private employers. Currently, prisons are protected from certain legal claims because they operate under Crown authority. The change would allow prisoners, staff, and visitors to pursue compensation claims and enforcement actions against the prison service for violations of workplace safety regulations and other statutory duties. This brings prison operations into alignment with standard employment and public safety law.

Presented by Blair McDougall.
