Telecommunications Infrastructure (Leasehold Property) Act 2021

Summary

This Act makes it simpler for telecoms companies to install broadband and phone infrastructure (cables and equipment) in leasehold properties (flats and shared buildings) without needing permission from every single leaseholder. It speeds up getting high-speed internet to more people, but gives property owners less control over their buildings.

A vote to support means

  • Supporting this Act means making it easier and cheaper to install fibre broadband and phone cables in apartment buildings and houses with multiple owners. It helps people get faster internet by reducing the costs and time needed to get permission from landlords to lay cables through their properties.

A vote to oppose means

  • Some people worry that landlords lose control over what happens to their property, and that telecoms companies might cause damage without proper compensation. Others are concerned that the Act doesn't give property owners enough say in how cables are installed on their buildings.
