Sentencing Council (Powers of Secretary of State) Bill
[As Introduced]
A
BILL
to
This bill expands the powers of the Secretary of State for Justice to influence sentencing guidelines set by the independent Sentencing Council. Currently, the Sentencing Council operates with significant independence to develop guidelines that judges use when sentencing criminals. This bill would allow the Secretary of State to direct or request changes to these guidelines, potentially making sentences harsher or addressing public concerns about specific crimes more quickly. Essentially, it shifts some decisionmaking power from an independent judicial body to an elected politician.
Presented by Robert Jenrick.
