Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018

Summary

This Act gives the UK government power to punish countries and individuals involved in serious crimes by freezing their money and banning trade with them. It also tightens rules on banks and businesses to stop criminals from hiding illegal money through normal financial systems.

A vote to support means

  • Supporting this Act means backing stronger rules to stop criminals and terrorists from hiding stolen money and moving it around the world. It gives the government and banks better tools to catch financial crimes and protects the UK's reputation as a trustworthy financial centre.

A vote to oppose means

  • Some people worry the Act gives too much power to government agencies to freeze people's money and assets without enough checks. Businesses also complain it creates expensive paperwork requirements that are hard to follow.
