Neighbourhood Planning Act 2017

Summary

The Neighbourhood Planning Act 2017 gives local communities official tools to have a say in planning decisions that affect their area. Residents can work together to create plans setting out what development they want, which councils must then consider when making decisions about new buildings and changes to their neighbourhood.

A vote to support means

  • Supporting this Act means giving local communities more power to shape how their neighbourhood develops. It allows groups of residents to create neighbourhood plans that influence what gets built, where, and what the area should look like in the future.

A vote to oppose means

  • Critics worry that neighbourhood plans could delay new housing when the country needs more homes. Some also argue it gives too much power to small groups of residents and might be used to block development that would help younger people or poorer families afford housing.
