Imprisonment for Public Protection (Re-sentencing) Bill [HL]

[As Introduced]
A
BILL
to

This bill provides a mechanism for prisoners serving Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) sentences to apply for resentencing, potentially reducing their prison terms. IPP sentences, abolished in 2012, were indeterminate sentences where prisoners had to prove they were safe to release rather than having a fixed release date. The bill aims to address the situation where hundreds of IPP prisoners remain incarcerated beyond what would have been their original tariff (minimum sentence length), many for decades, because they cannot satisfy increasingly difficult release criteria.

Presented by Lord Woodley.
