Groceries Code Adjudicator Act

Summary

This Act creates an independent Groceries Code Adjudicator to investigate complaints from small suppliers and farmers about unfair treatment by big supermarket chains. The Adjudicator can investigate breaches of a code of conduct and help ensure supermarkets treat their smaller business partners fairly.

A vote to support means

  • Supporting this Act means protecting small suppliers and farmers from unfair treatment by big supermarkets. It creates an independent person (the Adjudicator) to investigate complaints and make sure large grocery stores follow fair trading rules, helping smaller businesses survive and compete.

A vote to oppose means

  • Critics might argue the Act adds costs to supermarkets that could be passed to customers through higher prices. Some could worry it gives too much power to one person, or that it doesn't go far enough to actually help struggling suppliers and farmers.
