Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act 2023
Summary
This Act makes it easier and faster for scientists to develop new crops and farm animals using precision breeding techniques (genetic changes that could happen naturally, but happen much quicker in the lab). It removes some of the strict regulations that previously treated these as genetically modified organisms, allowing them to be developed and sold more quickly in the UK.
A vote to support means
- —Supporting this Act means backing faster development of new crop and animal varieties that could be more nutritious, disease-resistant, or better adapted to climate change. Supporters believe it will help UK farmers stay competitive and reduce the need for pesticides, benefiting both food security and the environment.
A vote to oppose means
- —Critics worry that speeding up genetic modifications without strict oversight could harm the environment or create unforeseen health problems. Some also have concerns about corporate control of food production and whether consumers have enough information to make informed choices about genetically modified products.
