Early Parliamentary General Election Act 2019

Summary

This Act allowed the Prime Minister to call a general election in 2019 before the normally scheduled election date. It gave voters the chance to elect a new Parliament during a time of significant political disagreement about Brexit and other issues.

A vote to support means

  • Supporting this Act means believing that Parliament should be dissolved and a general election should be held earlier than scheduled. Supporters argued this would give voters a chance to have their say on important decisions, particularly around Brexit, and help break political deadlock.

A vote to oppose means

  • Critics worried that holding an early election would be disruptive and costly, and questioned whether it was necessary. Some also felt that calling an election just to try to win more seats was using the law for political advantage rather than for the public good.
